CHAPTER TWENTY

Central Command of Vatican Intelligence

Vatican City

Athens was one hour ahead of Rome’s time, which mattered little since night had fallen over both plains. With a night sky providing ample cover for the Vatican Knights to proceed, the co-directors of Vatican Intelligence, Fathers Auciello and Essex, had been informed that Kimball Hayden and his team were in Lavrio gearing up for their transport to the outskirts of the island stronghold.

Onscreen was Isaiah’s necrology report, a premature obituary that outlined Isaiah’s death. Below Isaiah’s photo were digital numbers that counted down to the Vatican Knight’s time of execution, which was disturbing enough. But then the screen faded into snowy obstruction with flashing pixels and scrambling lines. But beneath this interference was a vague image, something with an indecipherable shape. As the pixels and undulating lines began to fade away, another image began to take shape, one with perfect clarity.

Isaiah was trussed up by a chain, the man dangling inches above the floor. His discomfort was obvious as the metal cuffs stressed the bones in his wrist. He had been stripped from the waist up, with his body having the greasy sheen of sweat to it. Isaiah swung in lazy half-circles above the floor, the moment of shooting the video cast in silence. Thirty seconds later, the video ended and then repeated itself as though on a loop. The feed, which was recently timestamped to indicate the hour difference, was tortuous to view as the suffering of one of their own was deemed barbaric in the hearts of those who watched.

“Download the video,” Father Auciello stated gloomily, “then forward it to Kimball. He’ll need to see this. Isaiah is still alive, inform him that we’ve received this confirmation.”

“Yes, Father.”

As the bar on the screen indicated the speed of the upload went from 0% to 100% in seconds, the video was sent to Father Spiros along with a message to advise Kimball of the incoming message in real time.

Once the message was sent and declared received on the other end, the feed of Isaiah swinging above the floor continued to play again and again in a tireless loop.
